How to Connect Your Meta Ad Account to SMLLR: Meta Sync Setup Guide
A literal, click-by-click walkthrough of connecting your Meta Ads account to SMLLR's Meta Sync — add SMLLR as a Business partner, paste your Ad Account ID, and run your first sync.
The 30-Second Answer
Connecting Meta Sync (Pro plan and above) is a one-time, three-step Partner connection — no OAuth login, no Meta app-review wait. Add SMLLR's Business ID as a partner in your own Meta Business Settings, grant that partner access to the ad account you want synced, then paste your numeric Ad Account ID into SMLLR's Setup tab and click Verify. Because this uses Meta's standard Business partner-access model rather than a custom login integration, there's nothing waiting on Meta's approval queue between finishing this walkthrough and running your first sync.
Before You Start: Two Things Have to Already Be True
You need an active Pro plan or above, and you need a Meta ad account you already control — Meta Sync connects to an existing ad account, it doesn't create one for you. If you don't have an ad account yet, set one up in Meta Business Manager first and come back once it exists. You'll also want at least one Lead Hub contact who's granted ad-targeting consent before your first sync does anything meaningful — connecting works either way, but a sync against zero eligible contacts has nothing to push.
Step 1: Find SMLLR's Business ID
Open Meta Sync from your SMLLR dashboard and land on the Setup tab. SMLLR's Business ID is shown right there with a copy button — this is the identifier you'll add as a partner in your own Meta Business Settings in the next step, not something you need to look up anywhere else.
Step 2: Add SMLLR as a Partner in Your Meta Business Settings
In a separate tab, go to your own Meta Business Settings — the connection is initiated from your side, not by logging into Meta from inside SMLLR.
- Go to Business Settings → Partners → Add.
- Choose to give a partner access to your assets, and paste SMLLR's Business ID from Step 1.
- When prompted to select which asset to share, choose the ad account you want Meta Sync to keep in sync.
- Grant at least "Manage campaigns"-level access on that ad account — SMLLR's shared connection needs to be able to create and update a Custom Audience on it.
Step 3: Paste Your Ad Account ID Into SMLLR
Back in SMLLR's Setup tab, paste your numeric Ad Account ID — the number itself, without the "act_" prefix Meta sometimes shows alongside it — into the Ad Account ID field, then click Verify (it reads "Re-verify" if you're reconnecting or checking an existing connection). SMLLR checks that the partner access from Step 2 is actually in place and, on a first successful connection, creates your Custom Audience inside that ad account automatically. If verification fails, the most common cause is a mismatch: double-check the Ad Account ID was copied correctly and that the partner access was granted on that exact account, not a different one under the same Business Manager.
Step 4: Run Your First Sync
Once connected, the Audience tab unlocks and shows your current eligible, pending-add, and pending-remove counts, along with the credit cost a sync would take right now. Click "Sync Now" to actually push that batch to Meta — nothing syncs automatically before this click. Check the Sync History tab afterward to see the exact number of contacts added and removed on that run, which is also where every future sync's log lives.
If Something's Blocking You
The most common first-connection snags, and what they actually mean:
- Verification fails immediately — the Ad Account ID doesn't match the account the partner access was granted on. Recheck both the ID (no "act_" prefix) and which specific ad account you selected in Business Settings.
- "No permission" or similar error from Meta — the partner access level granted is below Manage campaigns, or the partner invitation hasn't been accepted or propagated yet in Meta's system. Wait a few minutes and retry.
- A Meta Custom Audience Terms of Service prompt — Meta occasionally requires accepting its Custom Audience Terms once per ad account before allowing audience creation; this shows as an error message from Meta itself, not a SMLLR bug, and is resolved inside Meta Business Settings.
- Audience tab and Sync History stay locked — the connection hasn't succeeded yet. They only unlock after Setup shows a verified connection.
What Happens After You're Connected
A live connection doesn't mean anything syncs on its own — every future sync still needs a deliberate click on "Sync Now," typically folded into whatever routine you already run (after a marketing push, weekly, or monthly). Each sync only pushes the delta since the last one and only charges credits for contacts actually touched, so there's no cost to checking the Audience tab's preview counts before deciding whether a given sync is worth running yet. Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to give SMLLR my Meta login?
No. You add SMLLR's Business ID as a partner inside your own Meta Business Settings and grant it ad-account access — there's no OAuth login screen or password shared with SMLLR at any point.
Where do I find my Ad Account ID?
In Meta Ads Manager's account settings — it's a numeric ID, entered into SMLLR without the "act_" prefix Meta sometimes displays alongside it.
How long does the connection take to go live?
Usually minutes — mostly bound by how quickly Meta's own partner-access grant propagates on their side, not anything on SMLLR's end.
What access level should I grant the partner?
At least "Manage campaigns" on the specific ad account you want synced, so SMLLR can create and update the Custom Audience.
Does connecting automatically start syncing my leads?
No. Connection just establishes access — the first (and every subsequent) sync still requires a manual click on "Sync Now."
What if I want to change which ad account is connected?
Grant the new ad account partner access in Meta Business Settings, then update and re-verify the Ad Account ID in SMLLR's Setup tab.
I got a Custom Audience Terms of Service error from Meta — what is that?
Meta sometimes requires accepting its Custom Audience Terms once per ad account before allowing audience creation. It's an error from Meta itself, resolved inside your Meta Business Settings.
Can I connect more than one ad account?
No. Meta Sync maintains one connection and one Custom Audience per SMLLR account, not multiple ad accounts simultaneously.
