Getting Started

Creating Your First QR Code

A step-by-step guide to creating, customising, and downloading your very first SMLLR QR code.

Before You Begin

Creating a QR code in SMLLR takes about 2 minutes. You will choose a destination type (called a CTA — Call to Action), enter the relevant details, optionally customise the visual design, and then download or embed your QR code.

You can always edit the destination, design, and settings of any QR code after it is created. Nothing is permanent.

Step-by-Step: Create a QR Code

Always test your QR code by scanning it with your own phone before distributing it. Open your camera app or a QR scanner app and point it at the code.

1

Go to QR Codes in the sidebar

Click QR Codes in the left navigation sidebar. Then click the + Create QR Code button in the top right.

2

Give your QR code a name

Enter an internal name for this QR code — something that helps you identify it later (e.g. 'Restaurant Menu — Table 5' or 'Instagram Bio Link'). This name is only visible to you inside SMLLR.

3

Choose a CTA type

Select what you want the QR code to do when someone scans it. The most common choice is Website / URL (which takes the scanner to a webpage), but there are 30+ types including WhatsApp, UPI Payment, WiFi, PDF, and more.

See the QR Code CTA Types section in this Help Centre for a detailed guide on every available type.

4

Enter the destination details

Fill in the details for your chosen CTA. For a website link, this is just the URL. For WhatsApp, it is a phone number and optional pre-filled message. Each CTA type has its own set of fields.

5

Customise the design (optional)

Click the Design tab to change the QR code's appearance:
- Foreground colour — the colour of the QR dots (default: black)
- Background colour — the background of the QR image (default: white)
- Pattern style — choose from several dot and corner styles
- Logo — upload your company logo to appear in the centre of the QR code
- Frame — add a decorative frame with a call-to-action label like 'Scan Me'

6

Set advanced options (optional)

Click the Settings tab to configure:
- Redirect rules — geo-targeting, device routing, scheduled redirects
- Expiry — set a date after which the QR code stops working, or a maximum scan count
- Campaign — assign this QR code to an existing campaign for grouped tracking

7

Click Save & Create

Hit the Create QR Code button. Your QR code is now live and ready to scan.

8

Download your QR code

On the QR detail page, click Download and choose your preferred format:
- PNG — for digital use (websites, email, presentations)
- SVG — vector format, scales to any size without quality loss
- PDF — ready for printing

After Creating Your QR Code

Once your QR code is created, you can:

  • Edit — change the destination URL or any CTA details at any time

  • Customise design — update the colours, logo, or frame

  • Add redirect rules — set up geo-targeting, device routing, or scheduled routing

  • Pause — temporarily deactivate the QR code so scans no longer redirect

  • View analytics — see every scan, where it came from, what device was used, and when

  • Download — download the QR image in PNG, SVG, or PDF format at any time
