Custom Domain Troubleshooting
Solutions for common custom domain problems — verification failures, QR codes not using your domain, and DNS issues.
Verification Keeps Failing
Wait longer — DNS propagation can take up to 24 hours. If it has been less than 24 hours, keep waiting and retry.
Check the CNAME value — confirm the target is exactly
cname.smllr.app(no trailing characters, no www prefix).Check the Name field — enter only the subdomain prefix (e.g.
goforgo.yourbrand.com). If your provider auto-adds your root domain, check that the resulting record is correct.Cloudflare users — ensure the CNAME is set to DNS Only (grey cloud). Proxied mode is not supported.
Check for conflicting records — remove any A record or existing CNAME on the same subdomain before adding the SMLLR CNAME.
QR Codes Are Not Using My Custom Domain
Custom domains apply only to QR codes created after the domain is verified. Existing QR codes are not automatically updated.
To make an existing QR code use your custom domain:
1. Open the QR code in Edit mode
2. Go to the Settings tab
3. Look for a Custom Domain selector and choose your verified domain
4. Save
If you do not see a domain selector, the QR code was created before your domain was added. Recreating the QR code will use the custom domain by default.
Domain Shows 'Pending Verification' for a Long Time
The spinning loader next to your domain means it is waiting for verification. This is a manual step — SMLLR does not verify automatically. You need to:
1. Set up the CNAME record in your DNS provider
2. Wait for DNS propagation
3. Come back to Settings → Custom Domain
4. Click the Verify Domain button
The domain will remain in 'Pending' status until you actively click Verify.
I Removed My Domain and QR Codes Are Now Broken
When you remove a custom domain, any QR codes whose redirect URL was using that domain will return a 'Domain Not Found' error to scanners.
To fix this:
1. Re-add and verify the same domain — all QR codes using it will work again immediately
2. Or update each QR code's domain — open the QR code in Edit mode and switch it to use smllr.app or a different verified domain
If you no longer own the domain, option 2 is the only way to restore those QR codes.
