Creating a QR Code — Full Guide
A detailed walkthrough of every option available when creating a new QR code in SMLLR.
Overview
Creating a QR code in SMLLR involves three main stages: choosing your CTA type (what the QR does), customising the design (how it looks), and configuring settings (expiry, redirect rules, campaigns). All three stages are done inside the QR creation wizard.
How to Start Creating a QR Code
Open QR Codes
Click QR Codes in the left sidebar of your dashboard.
Click + Create QR Code
Click the + Create QR Code button in the top-right corner. The creation wizard opens.
Name your QR code
Enter an internal name in the Name field. This name is only visible to you in SMLLR — it will never appear on the QR code itself. Use a descriptive name like 'Cafe Menu — Ground Floor' or 'Product Launch Campaign — Instagram'.
Step 1: Choosing Your CTA Type
The CTA (Call to Action) defines what happens when someone scans your QR code. SMLLR supports 30+ CTA types.
Some examples:
- Website / URL — send the scanner to any webpage
- WhatsApp — open a WhatsApp chat with a pre-filled message
- UPI Payment — open a UPI payment screen on the scanner's phone
- WiFi — automatically connect the scanner to your WiFi network
- PDF Viewer — display a PDF document
For a complete list with step-by-step setup for each type, see the QR Code CTA Types section in this Help Centre.
Step 2: Customising the QR Design
After entering your CTA details, you can customise how the QR code looks. Click the Design tab.
Always test your customised QR code by scanning it before printing. Very dark background colours or large logos can reduce scan reliability.
Choose a pattern style
Select from several dot styles for the QR pattern — square, rounded, dots, classy, or extra-rounded. The pattern style does not affect scanning accuracy.
Set the foreground colour
Click the foreground colour swatch and enter a hex colour code or use the colour picker. This controls the colour of the QR dots.
Set the background colour
Choose the background colour for the QR image. White is the most universally scannable background.
Upload a logo (optional)
Click Upload Logo to place your company logo in the centre of the QR code. Supported formats: PNG, JPG, SVG. Keep logos under 30% of the total QR size for best scanability.
Add a frame (optional)
A frame is a border around the QR code with a call-to-action label (e.g. 'Scan to Order', 'Scan Me', 'Visit Us'). Select a frame style and enter your label text.
Step 3: Advanced Settings
Click the Settings tab to configure optional advanced options:
Campaign — assign this QR code to an existing campaign so it appears in campaign-level analytics
Expiry by date — set a date after which the QR code will stop redirecting and show an expired page
Expiry by scan count — set a maximum number of scans after which the QR code stops working
Redirect rules — add geo-targeting, device routing, or scheduled routing rules (see the Redirect Rules section for full guides)
Saving and Going Live
When you are satisfied with your QR code, click Create QR Code. The QR code is immediately live — it can be scanned right away. You are taken to the QR detail page where you can download, share, or further edit the code.
You can edit any QR code at any time after creating it. Changes take effect instantly, even for QR codes that are already printed and in use.
