Geolocation Analytics
See exactly where in the world your QR codes are being scanned — by country, state, and city.
What Geolocation Analytics Shows
SMLLR detects the approximate physical location of each scanner based on their IP address. Location data is shown at three levels of granularity:
- Country — which countries your scans are coming from
- State / Region — which states or regions within each country
- City — the most specific level, showing which cities are generating the most scans
Geolocation Heatmap (Premium+)
On the Premium plan and above, you have access to an interactive map heatmap that visually shows scan density across geography. Areas with more scans appear as brighter hotspots on the map.
The heatmap is useful for:
- Identifying which regions have the highest engagement with your print campaigns
- Understanding the geographic spread of your customer base
- Planning where to invest in offline marketing (billboards, events, in-store material)
The heatmap is available in the Reporting section. Click the 'Heatmap' tab on the analytics page.
Top Cities Table
Below the heatmap (or as the primary view on non-Premium plans), you will see a table listing the Top Cities by scan volume. This shows:
- City name
- State and country
- Number of total scans from that city
- Percentage of total scans
You can sort this table by scan count to find your top-performing locations.
Location Accuracy
Geolocation is based on the scanner's IP address, not GPS. Accuracy varies by device and network:
- Mobile data (4G/5G): City-level accuracy is typically within the correct city
- WiFi: Accuracy depends on the ISP's IP registration; may show a nearby city or the ISP's registration city
- VPNs: Users on VPNs may appear to be in a completely different location
For privacy compliance, SMLLR stores and shows city-level and country-level data only. Precise GPS coordinates are never collected.
